In early 2018, after 15 years of self-directed art study, I realized that I’d never put very much effort into life drawing, observational sketching…whatever you want to call it, I never drew much from real life. (It’s a common hazard of being self-taught, arrogant, and being misled by the deviantART myth that references are cheating.)
So in March 2018, I decided to make a concerted effort to start making observational sketching/drawing a bigger part of my art practice. Around the same time, I became interested in hand-making Coptic stitched books and sketchbooks, and made myself a little 5×7″ sketchbook with cream-colored pages:
Within a few days I began sketching in it. And here are the illustrations I’ve done in this sketchbook, with dates and titles.
